General Rules for Table Tennis – Singles
1. Starting the Match
A toss decides:
- Coin toss, OR
- Bat Toss
2. Serving Rules
- The ball must be placed on the open palm of your free hand.
- Toss the ball at least 16 cm (6 inches) straight up.
- The serve must be visible to the opponent.
- The ball must first hit the server’s side, then the opponent’s side.
- Each player gets two consecutive serves before switching.
3. Scoring System
- A game is played to 11 points.
- A player must win by 2 points.
- A match is usually:
- Best of 3 sets
- The first player to win 2 sets wins the match.
4. When a Point Is Won
- The opponent fails to return the ball.
- The opponent hits into the net.
- The opponent hits off the table without touching your side.
- Opponent makes an illegal serve.
- The ball touches the opponent’s body.
- Opponent strikes twice or touches table with free hand.
5. Let (No-Point Situation)
- Serve touches the net but lands correctly.
- The receiver was not ready.
- Any disturbance happens during play.
- Rally interrupted accidentally.
6. Playing the Ball
- Hit the ball after it bounces on your side.
- You cannot volley (hit before it bounces).
- The return must touch the opponent’s side at least once.
7. Changing Sides
- Switch sides after each game. OR
- Switch when one player reaches 5 points.
8. Legal Racket Use
- Any shape racket allowed.
- One side must be red, the other black.
- Must use ITTF-approved rubber. (Optional)
9. Touching the Table
- You cannot move the table or touch it with your free hand.
- Moving the table gives the opponent a point.
10. Code of Conduct
- No verbal abuse or racket throwing.
- No intentional obstruction.
- Players must show fair play and sportsmanship.
11. Dress Code
- Event-approved T-shirts must be worn during gameplay.
- Event-approved cap should be worn if required by the event rules.
- Players may wear any appropriate sports trousers or shorts suitable for movement and comfort.
- Proper sports shoes with good grip must be worn.
