General Rules for Paddle Tennis – Doubles
1. Starting the Match
- A toss decides which team serves first or chooses the court side.
- The opposing team chooses the remaining option.
- Each team chooses which player serves first.
2. Serving Rules (Doubles-Specific)
- Serve must be underhand and struck below the waist.
- Server must stand behind the baseline.
- Serve must land in the diagonal service box.
- Only one serve attempt is allowed.
- Server alternates sides after each point (right to left).
- Serving order within a team must remain the same throughout the set.
- Receiving order must remain consistent for the entire set.
3. Court and Position Rules
- Both teammates stand on their side of the court.
- Either receiving team player may return as long as the receiving order is followed.
- Players may switch positions after the serve is returned.
- No player may touch the net or cross into the opponent’s side.
- Players cannot obstruct the opponent’s shot.
4. Scoring System
- Uses tennis scoring: 15–30–40–Deuce–Advantage–Game.
- A set is won by winning six games with a 2-game lead.
- At 6–6, a tiebreak is usually played to 7 points (win by 2).
- Matches are typically best of 3 sets.
5. When a Point Is Won
- Opponents fail to return the ball.
- The ball is hit into the net or out of bounds.
- The ball bounces twice before returning.
- Foot fault is committed on serve.
- Opponents interfere with play.
- Either team player may hit the ball, but only one may strike it per shot.
6. Let Rules
- Serve touches the net but lands correctly.
- External interference stops the rally.
- A ball from another court enters play.
- Unexpected disturbance interrupts play.
7. Change of Ends
- Teams switch sides after every odd-numbered game (1, 3, 5, etc.).
8. Equipment Rules
- The paddle must be solid with holes and no strings.
- The ball must be a low-pressure sponge/rubber type.
- Equipment must be officially approved.
9. Foot Fault Rules
- Server steps on or over the baseline before contact.
- The server moves feet improperly during serve.
- Both feet must remain behind the baseline at contact.
10. Team Communication
- Teammates may talk during points, including calling shots (“mine!”, “yours!”).
- Players may not shout or gesture intentionally to distract opponents.
11. Dress Code
- Event-approved T-shirts must be worn during gameplay.
- Event-approved cap should be worn if required by the event rules.
- Players may wear any appropriate sports trousers or shorts suitable for movement and comfort.
- Proper sports shoes with good grip must be worn.
